    Description

VERY RARE large advertising card for CLACKAMAS COUNTY, OREGON, featuring PHOTO IMAGE OF INDIAN DAVE, "LAST OF THE SHOSHONE TRIBE", circa 1920's, with lots of information about Clackamas on the reverse (Oregon City, transportation, Willamette Falls, Mining and Timber, County Fair Assn., climate, schools, roads, etc. Measures 6.5x11 inches. Printed on thin card stock paper.
I can't find a single other example of this card/photo available for sale anywhere, and none mentioned on completed-auction sites - it's definitely a rare item; but I did get one hit - Dave and this image are discussed online in a book about GLADSTONE, OR (by Kim Argraves Huey) which has this image in it, along with some info about Dave and a direct reference to the image: the author states that Dave was one of three Shoshone children rescued by an early Gladstone settler during Snake River Indian hostilities of the 1850s-1860s. "Throughout his life Dave shunned all Indian ways, preferring to dress as a white man; however, on one occasion, Dave did dress up in native costume, as shown in this 1925 news photograph" (our image here), an "Indian wedding at the Clackamas County Fair in Canby"; he wears beads and blankets collected at the sites of the Clackamas Indian village and burial ground. It says he was a beloved and long-time local figure of Gladstone.
Condition: VG (stained, several edge scars, a 1/4-inch edge tear, wrinkle across top, corner crease, corner chip).
