1936 Happy Canyon Show Program PENDLETON ROUND-UP OregonHere is your chance to own this 1936 program from”Happy Canyon” show from the 27th Annual Pendleton Round Up in Pendleton, OR. The four page program displays a Native American Chief on the front, information about the show on the inside and local advertisers on the rear panel. Those advertisers are: Roesch’s Old Master Beer (Wm. Roesch Brewing), Pendleton Woolen Mills and Hamley & Company – Cowboy Outfitters.
The first Pendleton Round-Up was to be “a frontier exhibition of picturesque pastimes, Indian and military spectacles, cowboy racing and bronco busting for the championship of the Northwest.” It turned out to be that and more.
Following a July 4th celebration in 1909 consisting of bronc riding, horse races by Indians and Non-Indians, Indian feasts and war dances, greased pig contests, sack races, foot races and fireworks, some community and area leaders conceived the idea of an annual event to be known as the Pendleton Round-Up. Also, at that time, the “Let'er Buck” slogan, which is symbolic of the Round-Up, was inspired.
It was decided to stage the Round-Up some time around the middle of September to allow the grain farmers time to complete their harvest, and the livestock people an opportunity to make a late summer check-up.
The Round-Up was incorporated as a non-profit organization with papers signed July 29, 1910. The corporation's original legal title was "Northwestern Frontier Exhibition Association."
The key to the success of the rodeo and its many attendant activities is community participation through the efforts of its many volunteers. Indian participation has also been a strong attraction, whether in the Round-Up arena, at Happy Canyon, in the Indian Village or the Westward Ho! Parade.
The Happy Canyon Night Show of the Pendleton Round-Up has been entertaining audiences of all ages since 1916. The Happy Canyon Pageant is a show depicting the settling of the American West, beginning with a portrayal of the Native American way of life prior to the arrival of the white man, continuing with the arrival of Lewis and Clark, followed by the prairie schooners of the pioneers of the Oregon Trail and concluding with a reenactment of a frontier town's rollicking main street mishaps.
The colorful pageant takes you into the past to relive the experiences of our forefathers. The show begins with the portrayal of the early American Indian culture. Emigrants, seeking a new life, come to the frontier and soon the two cultures clash. Fighting breaks out, then peace comes and the scene changes to that of a wild frontier town. The show ends with a patriotic flourish that is unique and not seen anywhere else. In 2013, the Oregon Legislature declared Happy Canyon the state’s official outdoor pageant and wild west show. Happy Canyon celebrated its 103rd anniversary in 2019.
The program is in good condition. There is overall wear and evidence of past folds. Also upper right corner of the front is missing and there are mounting traces on the inside pages (see scan), but none of this distracts from this rare souvenir of this famous pageant. Will make a wonderful addition to any collection of ephemera and memorabilia related to the Pendleton Round Up or American rodeos. Will also ship internationally, though will have determine the cost of shipping depending on where it is being shipped.
I will combine shipping costs for multiple successful bids.

Please note that I pride myself on the care taken to package and ship items I sell on eBay. A quick read of my Feedback will bare this out. When possible I also try to recycle shipping materials to not only be more sustainable, but also to keep shipping costs as low. Be assured I never compromise the quality of materials used in shipping just to save money. As an active buyer on eBay I know what it is like to receive something that has been damaged in shipping and I never want that to happen with items I sell.
